Cost of creating VertexBuffers [XNA]

Hello,

I am wondering what the penalties are when creating and disposing of a VertexBuffer? (i.e. time, memory, garbage, etc)

I know its not something that should be done every frame but how hard should I try and avoid it outside the initialization?
