SDL_Surface Size

Does anyone know if I can somehow control the surface size when I render text using SDL_TTF. When I render a single glyph, no bigger than 10x10 pixels, the surface it produces is huge at 220 x 19.

If not, does anyone know exactly where the glyph will be rendered so I can cut the surface down to the approriate dimensions? Does it start at (0,0)?
