Maya + OpenGL (which exporter and format to use) ?

hello everyone,
I am beginning with games development and for now I am playing with simple Maya objects, exporting them to .obj and then coding them in OpenGL. Do you have any suggestions considering formats etc. ? because .obj is not the best one to play with ( cannot store animations, pivot points etc.) what about .md3 ? I was trying to find something about it considering maya exporter to .md3 but I failed.
