skinned models missing color in xna

im creating a 3d fighting game in xna.
what i have so far is two animated models(from the skinning sample)that can
move their arms and head using bones, and walk.
i also have the camera class all finished and well made.
the game is actually very close to being finished.(by code)
now im creating models in 3ds max, so my question is - what is the best exporter and how do i make textures to model(what uv type to use)?
im currently using fbx and .x(panda)
in the fbx it doesnt export the material for some reason im not even sure im doing the uv mapping right
in the .x i can only run models which has no other modifier than the skin one.
i also heard about the kw x port, but no matter what i do the models i export with cant be seen.
im having this problem for so many time and it drives me insane...
plz help!!
