I know there are lots of programs for creating games. I'm looking specifically for one for creating board games - I want to work as much as possible with gameplay design without having to fiddle to much with the technical (I already have a project dedicated to that). Is there a nice application for this>

Construction paper, markers, scissors, and misc game marker representatives, such as coins or more construction paper pieces.

I'm not really sure what else you'd need, other than some friends to help test the game for you.

The whole point was that I didn't want to invest much effort into anything other than gameplay design. I have made a game board before, and the amount of work that went into making everything was substantial.

What exactly are you wanting software for? If it is for simply testing gameplay mechanics then there really isn't anything faster than moving stand-in figures around a construction paper board. It is in fact common practice for videogame designers to test game mechanics this way before going to the computer because of just how much faster it is to try something out. Again, could you clarify what the actual goal is for what you'd want out of a piece of software?

did you mean game board simulation? where you can add number of dices, number of faces, number of player, number of rules?

a quick google give me this:

http://www.vassalengine.org/
http://gmc.yoyogames.com/index.php?showtopic=420852

but if it doesn't fit your description, i think your best bet is to use simple programming languages, such as basic.

pros: you can design the simulation the way you want it
cons: takes time

doing it the usual way/paper pencil

pros: you can get it working fast
cons: time intensive. the to simulate it is going to take a lot of time.

i know what you're thinking, a game engine focusing on this subject that make it easy for you to design game such as monopoly, and watch how the computer play it based on the rules you give. and watch how fun, or breakable the game is.

or maybe warhammer type.

but i haven't see it yet. why don't you give the above two link a try?

Alright, thanks fr the replies. If I'm going to be programming it, I'll be programming it in D with SDL (a step up from my current projects of C++ with SDL), and rip code from my other projects.

The Vassal link looks pretty good, thanks! I'm first going to work with the pencil and paper method though (it turns out my family's interested in working on it too, and they're not too computer-savvy)
