graphics pointer for SW rendering

how does quake2 obtain a graphics pointer for software rendering? i've tried SDL, but sdl_flip is too slow for my purposes. i need to be able to get a pointer in both windows and linux.

On Windows, pretty sure it uses DirectDraw or GDI DIB Sections instead if you use a command line switch. This is what SDL does internally if I remember right, at least on Windows. Don't know how it handles it elsewhere.
