ReleaseCOM vs. Release?

I reckon that your ReleaseCOM just checks if the object is NULL before calling release, which is very straightforward and no different from the SAFE_RELEASE macro you more commonly see.

For example Frank D. Luna uses it in his Introduction to 3D Game Programming widht DX9.0c.
And yes, in this case it is just a makro defined something like

#define ReleaseCOM(x) if (x != NULL) { x->Release(); x = NULL; }
