Desaturation filter

I'm looking for implement a desaturation filter, my goal is trasform an RGB image to an grayscale image and I want implement this in real-time as a post processing effect.
I'm posting here only to have some suggestion on the simple math behind this simple filter, because I would like implement this filter in the correct and efficent way.
