How can I draw on sprites?

As I know, I can use D3DXSPRITE to keep images for frequent use, But here I do need to change part of a sprite, say drawing some new points this time, some others the next time, and all this change must be kept. If I draw vertecis on the output screen, it''s needed to draw all those changed from beginning. Is there a way to get around? And I think someone here has supposed to use image with alpha info to make transparent sprites. But how can I make this images and how to load them into sprites? The Doc seems only support loading .bmp files. Thanks in advance for any kind advice.
