Can anyone tell me if allegro is worth using for graphics? I am using a DJGPP compiler I have MS VC++, but I really hate DX and I heard that OGL was strictly 3d all I want to make is a 2d side scroller please help Sage that which does not kill me makes me stronger

DO NOT use DJGPP for windows programming unless you like buggy slow compilers.
Try to love DirectDraw to make only 2d games. OpenGL is structured with 3d gfx in mind. However, it''s still as fast as DirectDraw or a bit less in doing 2d stuff.
My advice is to exploit OpenGL 3d pipeline to emulate 2d graphics by simply doing your own transformation matrix that takes screen 2d coordinates and transforming them to their equivalent in 3d. The results are simply what you expect. Doing so lets you make cool effects and get the most out of the api. For more information: refer to www.opengl.org online documents and faqs.
