D3D8 Lighting

I cannot get ambient light to show up right on my models. The material is set to reflect 100% ambient light and the light has an ambient light component. Normals are not an issue because diffuse lighting is fine. Drivers are not an issue coz it''s the same on all cards - what am I doing wrong? Is it something to do with those colorsource renderstates?
