Atmospheric scattering without using shaders: possible ?

I need to create a skydome (sphere-shaped) and I see all the Rayleigh/Mie examples use cg shaders. Since I need to compute NOT real-time scattering, could you point me out if such can be accomplished without using shaders ? Just computing colors for each vertex and saving those into an array ?
