The best way to do 2D Text in Direct 3d

Hey, I''ve just recently started making a game with directx 8, and have come across a small problem. I have no clue how to do text! The game is a 2d isometric tiled game in direct 3d (due to the drop of directdraw), and I''ve tried using LPD3DXFONT to make text, but even when I followed what it said i couldn''t get text to show up... If someone could please post a small code snippet showing how to use LPD3DXFONT (or a better method of drawing text if there is one), it would be appreciated. Thanx Shadowman
