I've come back to these forums yet again to try and learn how to program games. Anyways, like I've said many times before in these forums, I'm a novice game programmer with some programming experience trying to slowly learn or re-learn how to make simple games. I have a lot of trouble thanks to the fact that some of the things that I learned are out of date or somehow not compatable with the IDEs I'm using.
Now that I got some of that background information on where I'm coming from and what I'm doing here's the heart of the issue. I'm looking for some REALLY simple tutorials on how to make games in Java or C++. I know they are two completely different languages but I've made simple games in them before and believe I could write a game in either one. The problem is that I don't know all the right methods/functions to get what I want done, and I'm hoping some tutorials can fill me in on that. The IDEs I'm using are Microsoft Visual C++ and Eclipse for Java. Apparently, the code in my old books isn't compatable in C++ for some reason (and I'm not looking to make a Java applet).
Also, I'm not looking for stuff on teaching what variables are and the different types of them. I'm also not looking for info on how to make a command line type of game (like those ms-dos screens). I'm past that crap, and I've read about it a thousand times I'm talking about GUI programs using keyboards and the mouse for controls.
Any info, advice or resouces would be appreciated (as long as it's free).
Simple 2D game for dummies.

Really you need to be more specific on what you want to do here. C++ and Java are not just different..... You did not really specify a number of other aspects. For instance there are a ton of different graphics libraries for C++... I rather like SFML. Java "can" draw graphics using the drawing apis but it is rather slow (in my opinion) and so you may want to look into something like LWJGL.
Then the whole getting input/displaying graphics/playing sounds/ect part is usually part of the various libraries that you are using.... and so they will be specific to those... although there are some general concepts...The general concepts should be the same concepts you already know if you have created games in the past.
A lot of tutorials might be just as dated as the books you own...
So I guess my question is... What exactly do you want to do?
I guess I was being really general.
Let me put it this way, I want a tutorial on how to make Tetris in C++ or Java. A tutorial on making that game should provide me with the information I'm looking for. It will tell me how to display an image on screen, how to animate the image(s), and how to manipulate it with the keyboard. I'll learn some of the methods in making a 2D game and hopefully I can build more and more complex games. Probably coming back to this forum frequently to figure out how to fix the many errors I'll surely come up with along the way.
I believe all the games I made in the past were only in C++ or Java using the Windows API. I don't know if that makes much sense, because like I said I'm a novice programmer. I don't really know what SFML, LWJGL or SDK really are. I'll probably need something to tell me what they are eventually, but right now I just want to make a simple GUI game.

Lazy Foo's SDL Tutorials sound like they're probably the sort of thing you're after. They'll walk you through the basics of setting up and using the SDL library (with C++) to create simple graphical games.
You should have a decent handle on the basics of the language first -- those tutorials are about as simple as you're going to find, so if you're still having an overly difficult time I would suggest you go back to console programs -- just reading about them won't help, you have to actually write code to learn.
Hope that helps!

This stupid computer is making me type this post all over again so I'm going to get straight to the point.
Went to download SDL, tried to include it in Visual C++, folder didn't show up at all. Went into Windows Explorer, tried to find it, didn't show up until I hit a button that said "compatability files". Tried to re-install again, looked for folder again, doesn't show up. I'm working with Windows Vista, so that might make some difference compared to what guys normally work with.
Should I just totally reboot my system with system restore? Because I get the feeling that this is happening because of all the crap my family keeps downloading onto my laptop. Sorry for this messages aggressive tone but this computer is really pissing me off.

Well...I really don't know what's going on there, make sure yo include the library as instructed here http://lazyfoo.net/SDL_tutorials/lesson01/windows/index.php and...if I remember correctly you don't actually 'install" SDL you just download a compressed file and extract it in a folder. Then you tell visual studio where to find the library
Hope this helps

I did everything exactly as they described it. For some reason it won't show up at all, and I did make sure to extract the zipped files both times. I swear, everytime I try to get somewhere with my programming, some BS like this ends up happening and there isn't any explaination for it.
At this point I think it's just because Window Vista sucks, and my family needs to quit using my stuff. My family actually broke one computer, bought the one I'm on now, broke this one and had to get it repaired and then ruined the DC jack on my laptop and made me have to get it fixed for $150.
Venting aside, any ideas on a fix or work around would me appreciated.

I still don't know what to tell you O_O I've never used windows Vista...(from XP to 7) but...why don't you try using another IDE...MAYBE that's the problem or you discover something that you are doing wrong...try http://www.codeblocks.org/ with http://lazyfoo.net/S...locks/index.php
Also...maybe describing a little bit more what your problem is can help us help you

Windows Vista and Windows 7 SDL Installations are all the same. Windows 7 just bring in a few more updates and lessens a few stuffs from Vista, notably the resource hogging stuffs in Vista. There aren't any differences otherwise.
If you checked this:
link <---------- This is clearly a HTTP link. Wished the links are all colored blue.
Up there, you may then be able to fix your problem up in a jiffy.
If the SDL is not showing up, you might've downloaded and saved it to a folder you're not familar of.
