I'm currently undertaking some research at university on howuseful different engines are for artists. I would be very grateful if you couldtake 2 minutes to fill out a short survey about different game engines andtheir usefulness to artists

You can find the survey at:http://kwiksurveys.com?u=gameenginesurvey

Game engine research
It's far from the engines that are useful for artists.it is in my opinion much more about the tools. Valve Hammer makes it easy for me to express geometry and photoshop to do the textures. Wether i use my assets in quake, hl or source makes no difference to an artist. It may allow more graphical details, yes. But with no tools for actually placing and customizing them, the engine is worthless for an artist. Entirely.
IMHO, the tool-chain forms an important part of a "game engine".

When people go on about the great features of their engine's runtime, all I can think is "but how easy is it to get content into the runtime?" (i.e. "but what about the engine's tools?").
So, Valve Hammer Editor is an important part of the Source (and GoldSrc) engines.
[edit]The survey seems to cover this, with questions like "How would you rate the engine's toolset? The toolset is the group of tools that are provided with the game engine"

Whoops, alright i see that now.
I don' see the valve hammer editor as an integrated part of any specific engine, though. That's what i meant by what i said. Obviously both tools inside and outside the engine are important, as are support and community.
