In Halo Reach players can customize their characters by selecting different armors, some add on, some remove the previous armor and change it completely. They use this armor in game real-time.
I need to know how Bungie does this in their games, It seems really difficult, anyone has any ideas go ahead.

One way could be that when they modeled and animated the character (in a modeling program of some sort) they attached all the meshes of the model to the proper bones of the skeleton and made all the model animations.

Then, inside the game, you customize the character by picking which meshes will be drawn. Then when they render the model (by iterating all the meshes) they skip those who weren't selected at the time of the customization.
