Written by one of the world's top game designers, this book describes the deepest and most fundamental principles of game design, demonstrating how tactics used in board, card, and athletic games also work in video games. View it here. An Architectural Approach to Level Design This is one of the first books to integrate architectural and spatial design theory with the field of level design. The book presents architectural techniques and theories for level designers to use in their own work. It connects architecture and level design in different ways that address the practical elements of how designers construct space and the experiential elements of how and why humans interact with this space. Throughout the text, readers learn skills for spatial layout, evoking emotion through gamespaces, and creating better levels through architectural theory. View it here. What just happened? The enemies in my game suddenly became self-aware!

Seriously, my dumb little 'move back and forth repeatedly in a straight line' enemies suddenly started showing advance flocking behaviors and started attacking me. Some are even bouncing off walls, when they actually have zero collision detection code.
Now I'm afraid to touch that part of the code, because suddenly it looks like my enemies were programmed by an actual AI programmer... I have no clue what mistake I made that caused it, but hey, it's making the gameplay a heck of a lot funner!
watch out, you may have discovered the worlds First True Artificial Inteligince
just make shure it does not find SkyNet or the world as we know it will not exist.
hehehehehe

Keep up the Good Work EveryBody!.

I'm not overly picky about how you submit your game. If you don't have any file hosting at all then let me know and I'll make a contest FTP user for a server I pay for. It'll be lunch time at work when the end time comes, but I won't be a butt monkey if your game rolls in 5 mins late or whatever. I'm seeing about 3h 15m remaining.

3:15 mins? Sweet, I got another hour! My poor time usage is somehow working in my favor.

Wan, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have another judge!

cant we just upload it as a Attachment in a Post ?
and if we cant, how would we upload it to such a server ?
just want to have this covered before the time has come and gone by wich i should have submitted my half baked game.

The obvious has happend. I just started building the game with a vague mechanic in my mind which turned out to be crap (couldn't figure out a single interesting puzzle/challenge involving it) and now I have nice looking "not-game". Well maybe I can still figure out something very simple...

Wow Japro, that looks sweet! Looks like some kind of adventure game or something.

Not going to post any more screenshots of mine, because it looks pretty much exactly the same as it has previously, only the gameplay has been getting tweaked/polished.

About 2.5 hours left, and all I have left to do is add sound. However, I have pretty much zero experience doing game audio, so in that time I don't think I can come up with anything less annoying than what I have at the moment: silence...

So I guess I'm done!

It's almost 1am now and I have work in the morning, so where do I send this thing? Are the judges (and the other contestants/spectators) OK with me just submitting an exe? I've used unity so I could put up a web player somewhere I guess.

I would say go for it on the web players, anybody using Unity/Flash/etc. It can only make things easier on the judges (and whoever else wants to play your games).

Alrighty, looks like I'm the first submission! Ewe Can't Touch This!!!

You play a flying sheep on her quest to collect fruit (but not bad, black fruit), upgrade her flying abilities, and reach an arbitrary flight distance.

Press space to launch, and left and right arrows to steer. At the upgrade screen you can press enter instead of clicking try again.

Windows Download - no installation required, 6.8MB
Web player - no file download required, security of running in-browser. Requires browser plugin though.

I can build and upload an OSX version too, of anyone really wants it.

Sorry for the double post, but could someone please just quickly confirm that one or both of those works from a computer other than the one I'm sitting at? I don't see why either wouldn't, but just want to be sure before I go to bed.

To give you peace of mind, yes, the web player is working fine for me.
Didn't try the download, too busy putting the final touches on my entry. Just finished the last level, now going to run through it once more to double check all the humorous lines line up humorously.

My entry will be online in about 45 minutes. (I still have an Hour and 15 mins, right? Or am I miscalculating?)

Oh, good that the web player works.

I've updated the link in my previous post, so the windows download should work now too. Unrar and run the exe :) Thanks for checking that.

I'm done!!! Here is a link to my game.

Bubble Time

It is written in XNA 4.0 so you will need the following:

XNA 4.0:http://www.microsoft...08-d35c013c3b97

If you don't know if you have them or not, then try to install XNA 4.0 first, it will let you know if you have .NET 4.0 installed.

Go go go everyone...less than 50 minutes.

I will need somewhere to put my game or I can throw it on mediafire or some other stupid site that deletes files randomly.

Not sure if you did this but make sure your exe is running under the Reach profile not the HiDef. This will reach more computers and I doubt a weekend challenge entry isn't using any of the HiDef features anyway.

I am done! I've made a semi-unrealistic futuristic (that rhymed...almost) game-thing, which isn't really a game. I had loads of plans, and I only got time to implement a very basic survival mode :(. Anyway, I'll post the link in a second. Just dodge the nasty enemy ships, until help arrives. And if you're stuck, press space.

Here is my entry. Man this competition was a lot of fun, but now I need to get some sleep and take a shower because jesus do I stink. There are a couple known issues that I have included in the rar file (rename the download to .rar from .txt) under the file GameNote. This file also contains some interesting information such as all the time I spent on the game and what tasks, also it has my milestones list and as mentioned before the list of known bugs. The installer should download all dependencies etc for you if you do not have them already installed but if it does not, you will need the XNA 4.0 dependencies listed above.

Unfortuantely I only got time to make 3 maps (the map creation is not the issue, I can make a map in about 20minutes), because I spent a major amount of the time last night and this morning on trying to fix up the AI. I cleaned it up fairly good but there are still issues.

Anyway it was a lot of fun and I look forward to playing everyones entry and getting any feedback about mine. I also look forward to another challenge in the future.
Thank you for hosting the event zer0wolf.

Here we go - in the end I'm not too happy with the way it turned out, but unfortunately other things had my attention this weekend that were unexpected so wasn't able to devote as much time to it as possible.

Windows Download (604KB)

You'll need the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable which can be found Here.

Controls are:

Arrow Keys: Control the direction of movement of the Bubble.
Escape: Closes the application.

Your goal is to collect the 3 stars in each level, to progress to the next. However, you can't touch anything - especially the Beez and Leafz.

Good luck, hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Yeah, I did. My game is kind of retro 2d game, so it definitely does not use any HiDef features. If anyone wants to play my game I'll give you a heads up that it starts a little difficult, but once you get used to the input you will do better. Just a note, there are 5 different enemy types that will be spawned as you progress, so if you are only seeing one type, you aren't living long enough.

And here is my entry...!

Download Tunnel Jumper (Windows EXE - 5.05 MB)

Requirements:
Single core CPU or better, 1GHz+
Graphics card with OpenGL -- Enable VSync if you can, the timing code is crap!
Windows OS

To play the game:
- Close all running programs and save your work!
- Put on your helmet
- Extract the zip to your favorite folder
- Open "TunnelJumper1024x768.exe" -- if you have a small screen, try "TunnelJumper640x480.exe"

The game will probably require the MSVC++ 2010 runtimes, which ryan20fun has kindly linked already.

If you crash before the game shows up, try running the .exe as an administrator... My apologies for the inconvenience.
