Download the Game Design and Indie Game Marketing Freebook   07/19/17

GameDev.net and CRC Press have teamed up to bring a free ebook of content curated from top titles published by CRC Press. The freebook, Practices of Game Design & Indie Game Marketing, includes chapters from The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing, and An Architectural Approach to Level Design. The GameDev.net FreeBook is relevant to game designers, developers, and those interested in learning more about the challenges in game development. We know game development can be a tough discipline and business, so we picked several chapters from CRC Press titles that we thought would be of interest to you, the GameDev.net audience, in your journey to design, develop, and market your next game. The free ebook is available through CRC Press by clicking here. The Curated Books The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, Second Edition, by Jesse Schell Presents 100+ sets of questions, or different lenses, for viewing a game’s design, encompassing diverse fields such as psychology, architecture, music, film, software engineering, theme park design, mathematics, anthropology, and more. Written by one of the world's top game designers, this book describes the deepest and most fundamental principles of game design, demonstrating how tactics used in board, card, and athletic games also work in video games. It provides practical instruction on creating world-class games that will be played again and again. View it here. A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing, by Joel Dreskin Marketing is an essential but too frequently overlooked or minimized component of the release plan for indie games. A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing provides you with the tools needed to build visibility and sell your indie games. With special focus on those developers with small budgets and limited staff and resources, this book is packed with tangible recommendations and techniques that you can put to use immediately. As a seasoned professional of the indie game arena, author Joel Dreskin gives you insight into practical, real-world experiences of marketing numerous successful games and also provides stories of the failures. View it here. An Architectural Approach to Level Design This is one of the first books to integrate architectural and spatial design theory with the field of level design. The book presents architectural techniques and theories for level designers to use in their own work. It connects architecture and level design in different ways that address the practical elements of how designers construct space and the experiential elements of how and why humans interact with this space. Throughout the text, readers learn skills for spatial layout, evoking emotion through gamespaces, and creating better levels through architectural theory. View it here. Learn more and download the ebook by clicking here. Did you know? GameDev.net and CRC Press also recently teamed up to bring GDNet+ Members up to a 20% discount on all CRC Press books. ive added a few things when you start it, using SAPI
oh the reason the name is what it is, because i created that project dame day this compitition started and i tried createing a new project but did not want to debug throught VS2010 so that it will accept it, is has this odd thing that if i create a blank project i cant access the C/C++ setting node and i did not want to go createing stdafx and such again when i got a "stock" un altered project that does nothing.

In the Project Explorer - did you have the Project node selected before going to Properties?

I guess I should've noted as well that my game can be very frustrating to start with but all levels are achieveable in the alloted time with all the treasure (although you only need 1 to "win", your scores just better with the more you get).

Bah! MediaFire keeps rejecting my file once it gets to 100% ('server pinged out' or something).

Is there another way I can upload the file? It's ~18 mb in size.

Nope, third time's the charm! Here we are: http://www.mediafire...jgx1nvu742j9u26

(Actually, that's the fifth time, but meh)

Level 3 is the hardest level, but it's very much worth it if you can get through.

Try saving it as a rar and changing the extension to .rar.txt and upload it here like the rest of us....it might be too big though...

I downloaded it just fine on another computer. Ignore the advertisements around the page, you have to click on the part where it says "Click here to start download from MediaFire.."

I'll try uploading a second one in the method you said, but this link should also work.

Anyone with hosting issues (like Servant of the Lord), use my server:

server: ftp.adrianwalker.info
user: gdnet@adrianwalker.info
password: gdnet

Here in a little bit I'll compile a list of links to all of the submissions. All of us judges will get our reviews done and the winners will be announced within the next 36 hours.

Well, I missed the deadline, but I think I'm still going to release my game, once I've cleaned and polished it.

Great work everyone!

I uploaded it to the ftp server.

I also re-uploaded it to MediaFire as a .rar pretending to be a .txt.
http://www.mediafire...q1811h818svrj2l

The zip download is still valid also:
http://www.mediafire...jgx1nvu742j9u26

(And since 5 people downloaded it, I'm guessing it's not broken for everyone)

If you make it to the end, you get to enjoy a poorly written song recorded on a low quality microphone at 1 am in the morning sung by my brother who's throat was hoarse at the time. Still good for some lols though.

I'm now taking a break from the computer for a few hours, then I'll download and enjoy some of the other entrant's entries.

no i dont think so, what i normally would do is create a new empty project, but for some reason VS2010 does not show the C/C++ setting node under the projects properties.
so i have had to create the default project for the type i select and then slowly take out and replace the code otherwise the C/C++ option disapears(i have not ideas why, it used to work before i had to reformat my pc because of what of a svchost virus)
but other then that it is working like it is supposed to.

Bah, time has run short and I can't make the deadline. I have the game mechanics done but I don't have a title screen, smooth transitions between levels, and have a few bugs to fix. I guess starting a day late was a bad idea, but had fun anyway. I'm looking forward to playing all of your games =)

Worked this time, last time it kept telling me "Error downloading file" must've been high traffic or something.
