ideal sprite size from the artist's point of view

For a game I need tiles and sprites of 64x64 pixel. I wonder if it makes sense to let the artist create bigger images like 128x128 and downscale later because it might be easier to work on a bigger canvas ? Or is it even more work ? Background is that I do not want to get the typical 80s pixel looks, if thats possible at all for the intended size.
