D3D9: Does the window need to be visible?

A simple question: If I create a d3d9 device I have to specify a window (per HWND). At the moment I create the d3d9 device (per CreateDevice()): Does the window need to visible? Or is it possible to make CreateDevice() on a window that is not shown yet and call ShowWindow(hwnd) later?
