Edge softening, dependency on distance, GTA?

In GTA there appear to be some edge softening which depends on the distance.
Far objects are soft, near objects seem more accurate, but even then there is an edge softening which looks different to me than anti aliasing.
LOD maybe involved? maybe Depth Of Field?
Can someone give a hint?
