OpenGL Converting heightmap into a mesh

Hi there! I'm really starting with CG. I have a project and I need to generate a terrrain (a grid of triangles for instance) and use a heightmap image as the input to define the Z-height of the vertices.

I'm trying to find a paper, a tutorial or a book that explains how to do it. So far I found only tools (like ogre) that does the opposite (mesh->heightmap).

I can not use any tool, as I'll need to calculate this on the fly, using openGL ES 1.1 on android.

Any directions please?
