DX9 Instancing Character Animation

Is it possible to do character animation instancing in DX9? In DX10+, I believe people put the bones of all of their visible objects in one giant texture buffer.

Basically, I have a large set of animated trees that I want to be able to better batch and render with a single draw call.

There is a sample in the DirectX SDK called MultiAnimation. It's in DX 9 and it's got a lot of animated characters. I haven't looked at the source so I have no idea what they are doing but it might be something that you could find useful.
