OpenGL Access Violations and OpenGL

I''ve always been having problems with access violations when making OpenGL programs, they seem to occur randomly, sometimes I haven''t even changed anything in the code and I get one. So the other day, I got DetonatorXP from nVidia, hoping that new drivers would fix it, but instead, all my OpenGL programs give violations all the time now. I''m pretty stumped ''cause I can''t do anything OpenGL related anymore, please help. For the record, I''ve got a GeForce256 and I''m programming in Borland C++Builder. --- No game will ever rule more than CBT!

I would say that the odds are it is something wrong with your code. If you pass an invalid pointer, or accidentally lie about its size, or something like that, you cause a crash which just happens to be within the OpenGL code. OpenGL assumes everything you tell it is correct, so if it''s not...

It is normal for floating point exceptions to be generated if _control87(MCW_EM, MCW_EM); is not used (it''s defined in float.h)

I have had the exact same problem in the past.
I fixed it by creating display lists in
complile mode rather than compile and execute mode.
It also helps to make sure that you aren''t calling
any OpenGL functions which aren''t allowed between
glBegin and glEnd. For instance, I don''t think you
are allowed to change the active texture inside a
glBegin and glEnd block.

I''ve been trying to figure this out all day now. I''m already doing the _control87 thing, I don''t have any display lists and I''ve come to the point where I''m not even trying to render anything. I think I''ve narrowed it down to a problem with setting the pixel format, but I don''t know why it won''t work...

Through hard work, patience and a debugger, I''ve managed to come up with something completely weird. It seems that ChoosePixelFormat and SetPixelFormat succeeds only when I place a completely irrelevant line of code in a function that never gets called. I''ve no idea what causes this, I mailed both versions to a friend and they both worked fine so the problem is obviously on my end.

I hate to be a nag, but I could really use some help here...

Ha, it''s amazing what a little searching the internet can do for you. I just found the solution so in case anybody has the same problem, here it is:

If your program does not make any gl* calls, then your compiler''s smart-linker will probably not link opengl32.lib, so when you run your program then opengl32.dll will not be loaded, and so ChoosePixelFormat will fail.

Another thought, put a static infront of you PIXELFORMATDESCRIPTOR. EG:

      I have this code below in both my vertex and fragment shader, however when I request glGetUniformLocation("Lights[0].diffuse") or "Lights[0].attenuation", it returns -1. It will only give me a valid uniform location if I actually use the diffuse/attenuation variables in the VERTEX shader. Because I use position in the vertex shader, it always returns a valid uniform location. I've read that I can share uniforms across both vertex and fragment, but I'm confused what this is even compiling to if this is the case.

      Hello,
      I have a Bachelor project on topic "Implenet 3D Boid's algorithm in OpenGL". All OpenGL issues works fine for me, all rendering etc. But when I started implement the boid's algorithm it was getting worse and worse. I read article (http://natureofcode.com/book/chapter-6-autonomous-agents/) inspirate from another code (here: https://github.com/jyanar/Boids/tree/master/src) but it still doesn't work like in tutorials and videos. For example the main problem: when I apply Cohesion (one of three main laws of boids) it makes some "cycling knot". Second, when some flock touch to another it scary change the coordination or respawn in origin (x: 0, y:0. z:0). Just some streng things. 
      I followed many tutorials, change a try everything but it isn't so smooth, without lags like in another videos. I really need your help.

      I am currently trying to implement shadow mapping into my project , but although i can render my depth map to the screen and it looks okay , when i sample it with shadowCoords there is no shadow.
      Here is my light space matrix calculation
      mat4x4 lightViewMatrix; vec3 sun_pos = {SUN_OFFSET * the_sun->direction[0], SUN_OFFSET * the_sun->direction[1], SUN_OFFSET * the_sun->direction[2]}; mat4x4_look_at(lightViewMatrix,sun_pos,player->pos,up); mat4x4_mul(lightSpaceMatrix,lightProjMatrix,lightViewMatrix); I will tweak the values for the size and frustum of the shadow map, but for now i just want to draw shadows around the player position
      the_sun->direction is a normalized vector so i multiply it by a constant to get the position.
      player->pos is the camera position in world space
      the light projection matrix is calculated like this:
