Some kind of a seperate rendered layer?

Hello,

I am currently working on a program where the user is able to draw things with the mouse, everything works fine at the moment, but I have a question related to further developing. The layer where the user is drawing things is only cleared upon user request, i.e. if he/she wants to clear the screen. How would it be possible to add some kind of a second layer that's cleared and restored in every loop? Working similar to a GUI/Menu.

Use a render to texture and render it as a fullscreen quad (or partial screen, whatever you prefer).
