DirectX 9/10 Window handling

I am having a problem with the DXUT framework and alt-tabbing from fullscreen mode. In the samples included in Microsoft's DirectX SDK, if you put a DirectX 9 program into a full screen state and then alt tab to desktop, the screen will stay minimized as expected. Under a DirectX 10/11 program, if you do the same thing, instead of minimizing the window will then switch to windowed mode instead. When the window gains focus again, it'll automatically switch back to fullscreen mode. Is there a way to make it behave like the DirectX 9 samples? Would anyone know whats causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
