Texture on a Sphere

I was wondering how to change a rectangular texture so that when mapped onto a sphere, the proportions are the same as they were in the original rectangular texture. Or because the ''sphere'' I would be mapping the texture onto won''t techinically be a sphere, what is the formula for changing a rectangular texture into a morphed one that is proportionately the same as the first when mapped onto a sphere or other 3D shape.
