planet textures

I was thinking of making a game which included a galaxy with maybe 50 - 500 randomly creeated solar systems int it. (which I know is not at all realistic) I was trying to think of how I could make the textures applied to the planets randomly created. I have been working on a class that would create them, but it was going to be much harder than I thought. At least my way was. My way was to create a height map, which would be semi-randomly set using min and max and normal values. then it would translate that to different landforms. eg. if height is under 0 then water, different color water for different depths. etc. but there cam e to be way to many variables to describe as many worlds as I would need to make them all somewhat different. I was thinking maybe 9-10 planets per solar sytem. thats at least 450 planets. Thanx alot! Tazzel3D ~ Zach
