I'm looking for an artist for my indie project, a sort of Phantasy Star clone. Any tips on finding somebody?

This is a paid thing... you get what you pay for right?

I've scoured around various game art sites and emailed people but so far no response.

Well, you could always make a thread over at "Help Wanted", follow the template and wait for people to email you. That's kind of the option most people take, mostly because you get interested people and you're not just bugging random artists.

go to DeviantART http://www.deviantart.com/ you will find artist from crappy to the top Artist in the world. Many professional Artists have a DA page.
