i heard that 16bit variables is faster to run in a 16bit environment while 32bit variables is faster to run in a 32bit environment. is this true? is it better to use a 32 bit int than a char? (if you know that your variables don''t exceed 256 and are running a 32bit environment)

32-bit variables are faster in a 32-bit environment. You''d only use something that was not tha "natural" size of the computer (i.e. 32-bit on an IA32, PowerPC, etc and 64-bit on an IA64, Alpha, SPARC, etc) if storage space or portability was a concern (hence characters are represented with 8- or 16- bits)
