GameDev.net and CRC Press have teamed up to bring a free ebook of content curated from top titles published by CRC Press. The freebook, Practices of Game Design & Indie Game Marketing, includes chapters from The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing, and An Architectural Approach to Level Design. The GameDev.net FreeBook is relevant to game designers, developers, and those interested in learning more about the challenges in game development. We know game development can be a tough discipline and business, so we picked several chapters from CRC Press titles that we thought would be of interest to you, the GameDev.net audience, in your journey to design, develop, and market your next game. The free ebook is available through CRC Press by clicking here. The Curated Books The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, Second Edition, by Jesse Schell Presents 100+ sets of questions, or different lenses, for viewing a game’s design, encompassing diverse fields such as psychology, architecture, music, film, software engineering, theme park design, mathematics, anthropology, and more. Written by one of the world's top game designers, this book describes the deepest and most fundamental principles of game design, demonstrating how tactics used in board, card, and athletic games also work in video games. It provides practical instruction on creating world-class games that will be played again and again. View it here. A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing, by Joel Dreskin Marketing is an essential but too frequently overlooked or minimized component of the release plan for indie games. A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing provides you with the tools needed to build visibility and sell your indie games. With special focus on those developers with small budgets and limited staff and resources, this book is packed with tangible recommendations and techniques that you can put to use immediately. As a seasoned professional of the indie game arena, author Joel Dreskin gives you insight into practical, real-world experiences of marketing numerous successful games and also provides stories of the failures. View it here. An Architectural Approach to Level Design This is one of the first books to integrate architectural and spatial design theory with the field of level design. The book presents architectural techniques and theories for level designers to use in their own work. It connects architecture and level design in different ways that address the practical elements of how designers construct space and the experiential elements of how and why humans interact with this space. Throughout the text, readers learn skills for spatial layout, evoking emotion through gamespaces, and creating better levels through architectural theory. View it here. I'm trying to resurrect gamedev this month so I should be dropping by more often.

I still don't know my way around the new site.

Please. This site needs to be necro'd. It's just not the same without the old timers.

Every time I go into my account settings I feel like I've never used the internet before.

I've been here for, like, forever, but I doubt I've ever made much of an impression. (Except perhaps as "annoying kid who posts too much" - after being away for several years I still have more than 1.3 posts per day!)

Funny this thread is up in the Recent Posts when I think "hey, I haven't posted to gamedev in months...". Awesome to see the old names around. It is CRAZY to think that I joined this site almost 10 years ago. I should come back. Miss this place. It's what got me into the industry.

10 years on the same site seems so much. I've just joined Gamedev and... wait wut? That was two an a half years ago???

(anyhoo, this 4 weeks off Gamedev seemed longer than the 2.5 years on Gamedev...)

Now if you'll only update the site to the Black theme ... that'll be great :)

We're getting old people.. Can you believe it's been over 11 years since we started? Some of you guys date back to when it was Sweet Oblivion / GP99. Hopefully we can get this site fixed up soon.. it's in bad need of some re-organization and simplificationizing.

I'm here only every few months or so, when I remember the good old gamedev, and like to have a look at IOTD or some articles or book recommendations. Alas, I don't have much time these days to read in forums.

I know Myopic Rhino became "Dave Astle".. everyone else on that list has been MIA for a while now. I think most of them have professional jobs with "responsibilities" now. ;)

There's no official black theme for mobile but the default mobile site does let you switch to darker colors - it does seem to be broken now tho :/

I suppose, well enough to bust my way into the software development industry at least :P unfortunately, writing accounting and ERP software seems to pay better than the game development industry for me. I still enjoy independent works though.
