This is what I am trying to achieve. I have multiple user login to some system. In the system, they all see a canvas element. I want to be able to draw on the canvas and have all of the logged in user's canvas be updated in real time. What exactly would I need to get this going? I know I would need node.js( server side javascript ) but anything else besides the canvas element? Do I need to have my own server or something? Can someone clear this for me please.

There is no particular reason you would need node.js for this. The server and client can be written in totally different languages - they only see bytes on the wire. Writing them in the same language is merely convenient because you can share common code directly.

You'll need some server. One option is to get the players to host their own servers. Another is to buy/rent a hosted server. If you are a poor student or otherwise want to avoid committing to paying for an external server, you could be able to set up a always-on machine at home during development.

Yes I am a poor student. How would I get started hosting a always-on machine server? I understand that its all just convention, but I would like to use node.js. Thanks for the answer.
