How would you create a GTA-like map that is in sync with the 3D world, that meaning the position on the 3D world is asociated with a position on the 2D map?

How would you create a GTA-like map that is in sync with the 3D world, that meaning the position on the 3D world is asociated with a position on the 2D map?


In theory, it is very simple. You can render a low detail version of the scenery using a top down orthographic view, and then render a coloured dot for each moving object of interest. The position of each dot its the position if the 3d object being represented; the orthographic view solves the issue of height for you. Alternatively, you can set the Y part of the object position to an arbitrary value so that things on the radar screen appear in layers.
