Is it necessary to patten an application or game idea for smartphones? If so, when in the process should that be done? Thanks in advance.

No. It's not necessary. Read these:

Thanks very much. If Im understanding what I read, I have to go through a process with the game developer in order to get a copyright. Is that correct?

You have to make something original, expressed in a tangible form. If you have a legal business entity that made it, with proper ownership clauses in the paperwork, then you already own the copyright. You can also register it.

Based on your other posts on the forum, you are looking at the wrong end of the project.

You need a business plan and a business lawyer.

At this point in your project you should be creating a business entity, looking at NDAs and funding and employment law. You are asking in other threads about hiring someone which mean you must already have some funding from somewhere. It seems a surprising thing considering the other questions you are asking.

Regestering for copyright and trademark and patent protections doesn't happen until the products are basically finished.
