My game is probably about 1 month away from alpha-testing, and probably 3 months away from widespread beta-testing. I'm looking for suggestions about the right way to garner alpha and beta testers for my game.

It is going to be a web-based MMORTS, so obviously, I need a good number of gamers on the site, to really test it out. Any suggestions? I haven't come across sites, that are specifically set-up to help developers connect with potential beta-testers.

Any help in this area would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

If your product is good you could try using reddit to garner some support in /R/Gaming

But be aware that there is really no good way to artificially get high on the list. You just have to hope that people like your product and it spreads.

For initial testing you need to get real software testers to go in and do all the crazy things that good testers do. They typically cost money, a bit more than the minimum wage. You won't get much of that good testing over the Internet for free.

Your public beta testers should fit your target audience. That is after you have done all your own testing by real testers who know how to test software. Your game needs to be rock solid before they see it, unless you want the public viewers to get a seriously negative impression that ends up all over the web.

Consider recruiting them the first test of your marketing strategy.

... You do have a marketing strategy, right? If you want to be "MMO", you need plans on how you will get those hordes of people driven to your site around the globe and around the clock. That requires a well-considered (and usually well-funded) strategy.

Thanks for the help guys! I appreciate it. While I have had ideas for my Marketing Strategy, I am now formalizing them, and as you said, putting them into action to see how many beta testers I can garner. Thanks again for the advice.

If you have marketing questions, you can ask those in the Business forum.
Closing this thread for now, since your question was answered.
