Any ways to fix dithering on old 16bpp code, beside setting display mode to 32bp?

Hey guys,

Working on old DX7 game code which was all coded around a 16-bit engine. The game uses dithering but with newer hardware, it is not working. Display produces lots of highly noticeable color bands.
I tried setting the display mode to 32bpp within the source and it does fix the color banding, but it results on a (pretty important) number of other display issues.

So I was wondering if any of you guys knew about any other way, beside change the setdisplaymode to 32bpp, to fix the (lack of) dithering with newer hardware...
