Help: How to get normal from RLA file format?

Hi, all. I''m a newbie here. I''m using 3DSMAX to build some testing scenes now. And for my special purpose, I want to get the global normal vector for each pixel with the rendered images. Some guy show me that I can use the RLA file format. But after I built a small program to read the RLA image, I found that it is coded as a "LONG" type channel. Then what is the real normal vector value?
