Network games

Kind of new, since it's been two decades since I programmed.

I saw the thread on "writing games, not engines," and I'm not sure if network communication falls within this area. There is essentially TCP/IP libs for every OS, but these are primitive. Is there an TCP/IP or network communication engine I should look into or should I use what is provided with Win32/*nix? Keep in mind, my budget goes to my living expenses, so pretty much anything costing > $100 is out.

Hmmm...looks nice and I like their licensing policy. They allow you to grow your business, if you can do, before they expect you to pay money to them. That's actually beyond fair.
