I have an idea for a game controller that I want to make. It will have a USB interface so I need to figure out how to write a windows driver so that I can map all of its buttons and controls to actions within games. Does anyone know where I should begin when writing a windows driver?

There is no need to write a driver if you construct a HID class device - the device will report which buttons and axes it has and will show up as a game input device in Windows (and presumably most other modern operating systems) automatically. I've used V-USB with inexpensive AVR microcontrollers to build HID class devices - they have some reference projects if you need pointers to getting started.
