3ds max selection effect

When the mouse pointer is in the "air", how can you determine the exact location it is "pointing" to? so that I can start to draw on the viewport?

I used picking for that in one of my project. Not sure how it should be done in dx, but in opengl, i just render everything a different color then read the color of the pixel under the mouse. It should get you started.

EDIT: i though you where talking about 3d, sorry.
