In the scenario of a simple 2D RPG what is the best way to handle the movement of players between client and server?

In the scenario of a simple 2D RPG what is the best way to handle the movement of players between client and server?


The best way is the way that best fits your particular game requirements.

I would probably use "click to walk," and not start walking the character until a message has been heard from the server.
Thus, player clicks on tile X.
Message goes to server "player P wants to walk to tile X."
Client hears back from server "player P starts walking to tile X."
At that point, start moving the character towards tile X.
