Hi guys,

Has anyone got the EWQLSO Silver pack? I can't work out what "Essential instruments and articulations" means, and the information given on the website is misleading at best. I've found a manual online which suggest you get loads of instruments, but the website itself makes it look like you only get a few.

Can anyone with the library clear this up for me?

Thanks in advance!

Go to http://www.soundsonline.com/Symphonic-Orchestra .
Above the 'Symphonic Orchestra' in flowery text, click 'Instruments'.
You get everything on that page with a † sign next to it. (Which is to say, usually just 1 or 2 articulations of the important instruments, and usually only 1 section of them rather than several different sections.)

Hi. Being the entry-level library you will get the basic articulations, mostly Sustain and Staccato - there are a few DXF (dynamic cross-fade) articulations for the section instruments which are very nice. While a bigger number of articulations is better, the programming of these articulations will play a major role in the realism of the piece (i.e: using note velocity, MIDI controls for expression, cross-fading of articulations etc), so you can still make Silver sound good even with its basic articulations.

Consult the Articulation Tables in the manual\guide. At the right of each row you can see with the (P G S) indicator if the articulation is present in Platinum, Gold and Silver: http://www.gearslutz...lso.pdf#page=37

Note the above guide is for the old Kompakt version of the VST. Now that they are using the PLAY engine I can't certify if this list has changed.

Hello,

If you're looking for a basic library, I'd rather wait and save up some money and go for the Gold Complete library instead.

The hassle with the iLok licensing is really the only downside, the current versions of the Play engine are really stable (at least for me, in Logic and Ableton Live) and you get a lot of great-sounding articulations and the 'QLegato' patches which I'm very fond of.

Some people argue the EWQL sounds are a bit too pompous and roomy (I don't have the close articulations included in Platinum either), but for me they work in most situations and mix very well with live recordings and other libraries like Symphobia.

Don't forget comparing prices, here in Germany I saved over 100 Euros because East West has no German distributor at the moment - don't know the situation in UK right now, but there may be a better deal than ordering straight from soundsonline.com.

Cheers,
Moritz

Hi Johnny,

I've got EWQLSO Gold - So if you want to get an impression of the difference between gold and silver my pokemon composition tracks might give you an impression (here) as they almost exclusively used EWQLSO Gold. I find the vast range of articulations the best thing about it so if you're losing out on possible articulations then you're losing out on possible realism of certain parts. I'm certainly not an expert on all EWQL products but i'd say if you're making the big buy you may as well go for Gold! The samples are brilliant if a little reverb-heavy.

Hope this helps,

Calum

[Argh, typed out a whole reply and lost it by clicking on the wrong button in the editor. Failure!]

Thanks for the responses guys - it seems then that the Silver edition isn't worth the money, as a quick glance at the website makes it look like it contains less than 5% of the total number of articulations. Probably why they make it so complicated to work out!

I currently use Kontakt for my orchestral samples, so if EWQLSO Silver doesn't represent much of an increase in quality then I'll probably have to dig a little deeper into these pockets and spring for Gold.

Cheers again!
