Hi all,

I've been considering relearning modern c++ in order to build a game for Windows 8 Metro to be released sometime next year. I've got a lot to learn but I was just wondering if it is safe to assume that any existing c++ game engine that uses DirectX should be useable to build a Windows 8 metro app?

XNA is not supported under windows 8 metro but c++ and Directx is and is the recommended way to build performant games.

Can anyone think of reasons why existing c++/directx engines wouldn't work? if not can anyone give some recommendations to good engines - 2D or 3D?

There could be many reasons why it wouldn't work. Metro apps are sandboxed, and there are many additional restrictions (for instance, there is no direct access to the file system) and some win32 APIs that are not available. I would suggest installing the Win 8 developer preview build and trying whatever existing engine you want to use.
