GUI with relative sizes

Hey, I'm working on a GUI that uses relative sizes (pretty much like CEGUI). Sometimes also the absolute sizes and positions have to be known and this causes some problems. The absolute values can be determined by checking the absolute values of the parent control. Whenever a control is changed, the values have to be propagated to all childs. This causes some massive travesals of the control hierarchy in the initalization phase because the tree is built in an arbitrary order. Is there any elegant way to handle this? I couldn't figure out what CEGUI is doing by looking at the code, so I figured I'll ask you guys...
