How to get dimensions in units in d3d9?

After googling for awhile, I couldn't seem to find relevant info on this topic. (maybe overlooked).
What I'd like to do is to get the area in x-z plane of the mesh.
Do I just construct a bounding box for it? How do I transform it when the object moves?
And also, how do I project the top plane of a mesh onto the ground plane?
If it's convenient for you, could you take me to some good readings on these topics?
BTW, what are your recommended readings for collision detections and handling?
