Unit Vison and Detection

I have been working on a game for quite some time and since I recently increased the amount of objects (ships and planets) I have run in to performance issues. I need some way to quickly find if "enemy" ships are within range so I know weather or not to draw them. I have read in a couple places that KD trees could be used but other places say that is not efficient for a dynamic set. I am currently just using a grid and checking against all objects relatively close to each individual ship which worked on a smaller scale but is pretty inefficient.
