Hello!

I have written an heightfield class in my little engine yesterday. I was wondering how it is possible to show so many details on the ground in mmos like wow. Are there used 10000x10000px textures? I dont think so.
What are common techniques for this?

Thanks in advance!

No, it's typically a fairly small texture, which is tiled over and over again. Because they use bump-mapping, which gives an illusion of relief depending on the angle at which you look at the texture, the tiling isn't very obvious. The vertex density (number of vertices per terrain unit squared) is typically very small, most of the subtle detail is added with textures and methods such as bump or parallax mapping (which are far cheaper than adding vertices for more detail, and provide an excellent approximation at most view angles).
