Stencil Shadows Quality

Hi forum,
so what do you think (or know) about the different quality settings found in a game, in particular Stencil Shadows.

I've seen some games with different settings like: Low, Medium, High, Very High. But, what's the meaning of this? I'm assuming it depends on how many lights are taken into account when computing the shadow volume.

Any thoughts?

There's a lot of things that a "quality" setting could influence when rendering a scene with stencil shadows...
* Number of lights that cast shadows.
* Number of objects that cast shadows.
* Types of objects that receive shadows.
* Distances that shadows are cast.
* Limits of number of lights-per-caster or casters-per-light.
* Polygon counts of casters (it's common to use lower LOD levels for the stencil volume).
* Whether any kind of softening technique is used / whether area-lights are simulated.
