2D Dynamic Rigid Body Collision Response

I've been trying to find information on how to detect at what point in time two rigid bodies collide for accurate collision response. All I've been able to find is tutorials which say I have to multisample or sweep test. Are there any practible (usable in games without impacting on performance too much) and accurate solutions?
