OpenGL OpenGL - rendering text on YUYV 422 surface

Beforehand, apologies for the lack of graphics programming...

I have a sequence of YUYV (YUV:422) raw image surfaces. Now, I'd like to take these surfaces and draw/render some text to these surfaces (with a shallow copy pointer) using non other than OpenGL.

Please note that I am not looking to render these surface to screen which will hopefully mean that I can avoid the costly YUV <=> RGB conversion?

Now, I started going through various tutorials, and most of these tutorials deal with on-screen presentation of graphics. Could you offer any tips/pointers where I could find a code sample? I tried using my favorite generic search engine but didn't quite find what I was looking for.

Any tips/suggestions would be much appreciated...
